It has been announced that the Fukuoka Prefectural and City governments will both introduce a tourist accommodation tax. Prefectural Governor Hiroshi Ogawa announced at a press conference on November 6 that double taxation should not be an issue in and of itself, but that the distribution of responsibility is a topic that needs further debate. Top level officials from the prefecture and city met on November 1 to discuss the tax, which will see tourists charged an additional fee for the time they spend in hotels and other forms of accommodation. Those present at the conference decided to proceed with their respective plans to introduce the new system of taxation, but will continue to consult with each other to ensure that neither side is overburdened.
