Fukuoka Prefecture is exploring the possibility of introducing an accommodation tax on hotels and their guests. The number of overseas tourists visiting the prefecture reached a record high of 2.8 million last year. The implementation of this tax would help the city and accommodation facilities be better equipped to welcome the increasing number of visitors to the area. Tokyo and Osaka have already introduced a similar system that sees guests who spend more than ¥10,000 per night on a room taxed between ¥100 to ¥300. Fukuoka Prefecture will put together an expert panel to discuss the matter and explore whether or not this kind of policy will be feasible. Source: Shikoku Broadcasting Co., Ltd., 2/8/2018
