Fukuoka Swimming Championships Ban Russian, Belarusian Athletes

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) has decided to continue its policy of not inviting Russian and Belarusian athletes to the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka in July, citing the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. Last year, FINA did not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials to participate in the Swimming World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, for the same reason. According to Fukuoka City, FINA has informed them that the decision not to invite Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials to the Swimming World Championships, held from July 14th to 30th this year, will be maintained. While FINA has approved the establishment of a working group to explore ways for athletes with Russian and Belarusian passports to participate in international competitions in a neutral capacity without representing their country or region, following the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommendations, it will take time to reach a conclusion. As a result, the decision will remain in place for the Fukuoka competition. Source: NHK
