Fukuoka Teacher Dismissed After Drunk Cycling Arrest

The Fukuoka City Board of Education dismissed a 38-year-old teacher from Shimizu Special Needs High School on June 2 following his arrest for drunk cycling. According to city officials, the teacher attended a workplace farewell and welcome party in April, consumed alcohol, then allegedly stole another person’s bicycle from a parking area and rode it while intoxicated in Minami Ward. He was subsequently arrested by police on suspicion of drunk driving. During the city’s investigation, he admitted to both the drunk cycling offense and the bicycle theft, expressing remorse for damaging public trust in education. The Board of Education imposed a disciplinary dismissal, while the school principal received a written reprimand for inadequate supervision and management responsibilities.
