Fukuoka Uses Metaverse to Combat Youth Loneliness

As reported in local media, Fukuoka Prefecture has initiated a creative solution to a pressing issue, launching a virtual space called “Come, Let’s Talk About Our Feelings Plaza” within the metaverse. This digital gathering spot aims to support young individuals who feel isolated or have difficulty with life, especially those who may be hesitant to engage in face-to-face interactions. Open on a weekly basis, the space is supervised by mental health professionals and enables interaction through avatars and chat. Although the general suicide rate in the prefecture has declined, there has been an alarming increase among those under 19. It’s heartening to see local authorities adapting technology to meet the unique challenges faced by today’s youth. This effort shows a recognition of the changing ways in which young people communicate and seek support, and it’s a step in the right direction to foster connection and community in a time when it is most needed.
