Fukuoka’s Population Declines for First Time in 16 Years

According to a report by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the population in Kyushu and Okinawa as of October 2019 was 14.25 million, a decline of 0.38% compared to the previous year. Amongst the eight prefectures, only Okinawa saw an increase (+0.39%,) while Fukuoka experienced its first decrease (-0.07%) in sixteen years. In addition to the decreased birth rate and aging population, young people moving to the Tokyo metropolitan area or other urban cities has been a significant factor of the downtrend. Source: Nikkei
