Mycena lux-coeli, a species of bioluminescent mushroom, is lighting up the forests of Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture. The glowing fungi can be seen in the Amami Natural Forest (Amami Shizen Kansatsu no Mori) in Tatsugo Town. Nondescript brown mushrooms by day, Mycena lux-coeli, glow at night because they contain luciferin, the same light-emitting substance found in fireflies’ abdomens. The mushrooms can be viewed in wet months of May and June, with “peak glow” coming in June. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun (May 8)
