Furusato-Kan Turns 20, Will Hold Festival

Hakata Machiya Furusato-kan, the hands-on local history and culture museum in the heart of the city, turns 20 on Aug. 10. On Aug. 9 at 16:00, a commemorative Summer Festival will be held next door at Kushida Shrine. The event will feature traditional performances by local preservation groups, yo-yo making for the kids, and a beer garden for the adults. In addition to displays of primarily a Meiji and Taisho era folk culture, the museum also offers hands-on workshops and sells local handicrafts. The museum underwent a complete overhaul in 2011 to coincide with the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen Kagoshima Line. Since opening in 1995, the museum has welcomed 1.85 million visitors.
