The Fukuoka Board of Education announced that it will rent the Daimyo Elementary School, which is slated for closure next March, to the Futaba Academy for two years starting next September. Futaba will use the building as a temporary school while it rebuilds its existing elementary school to meet earthquake-proofing standards. Futaba will rebuild its elementary school, which was built in 1966, in the same location but has no room for a temporary building because its campus also includes a kindergarten and a junior/senior high school. Daimyo Elementary School was built in 1929. Situated in the heart of Daimyo, there are no immediate plans for the site’s use once the school closes, although some residents are calling for preservation of the art deco style building.
