Goto City Opens Fukuoka Office

Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture opened an office in the Dai-Hakata Building (2 Hakata-Ekimae, Hakata-ku) on Apr. 1. Office staff will work on promoting tourism and specialty goods from Goto and plan to restart the Gotojin Koryukai, an association of Goto natives living in Fukuoka. Goto City is located on Fukue Island in the Goto Islands, which lie about 100km west of Nagasaki City. With a population of about 40,000, the islets are known for kankoro-mochi, a mixture of steamed sweet potatoes and mochi, and Goto udon, which is typified by broad noodles in flying fish broth with a dash of camellia oil. The new office is part of a project to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Goto City, which was formed from a merger of five municipalities in 2004. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 4/2
