Let’s Bring the ILC to Kyushu, a group of young people in their 20s and 30s, began collecting signatures on May 1 in an effort raise awareness of the International Linear Collider (ILC), a cutting-edge particle accelerator. The group is a member of the ILC Asia-Kyushu Promotion Council, a public-private committee established to attract the ILC to the Sefuri Mountains on the border of Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures.
The group’s canvassers plan to use their “youth power” to collect “several hundreds of thousands of signatures” by July when the Japanese candidate site for the collider will be decided. The other candidate site is in the Kitakami Mountains of Iwate Prefecture. Given its scale, the ILC is estimated to have an economic ripple effect of ¥1.1 trillion. Since its establishment at the end of March, Let’s Bring the ILC to Kyushu has collected 1,336 signatures from its website (http://ilc-kyushu.com/) and has received pledges of support from 58 companies.
