According to land ministry statistics, Hakata Port had the most foreign cruise ship ports of call in Japan in 2014. There were 99 ports of call by foreign cruise ships, a whopping 80 more than the previous year, due to a major uptick in Chinese cruise ship stopovers. Nagasaki, which welcomed 70 cruise ships to its port, ranked second. Throughout Japan, there was a record high 654 ports of call by foreign cruise ships in 2014. Ports of call topped the previous record set in 2008 before the Japan-China relations soured in the wake of the Japanese government’s decision to nationalize the Senkaku Islands.
