Items featuring ‘Amabie,’ a Japanese yokai ghost believed to ward off diseases, is being showcased as a safeguard for people from the new coronavirus. An Arita-yaki seller in Saga Prefecture developed a special porcelain plate and a potpourri dish to share the hope of ending the pandemic. Reservations are being accepted for a limited 30 pieces (¥3,300 for each item). Also, Amabie lucky charms were created by a local promotion group in Kumamoto Prefecture. The group adopted the motif to the local Doro-gangu toy production and started selling the first 43 pieces on Facebook (¥2,750/pc). The half-man-half-merman ghost is also witnessed on social media postings with hashtags. #アマビエ, #アマビエチャレンジ, #アマビエ祭り and so forth. Sources: Kinshodo / Facebook 2020-04-26
