Heavy Rains in Kyushu Leave 20 Dead and Many Missing

Record heavy rains hit some regions of Kyushu in the early morning of July 4. Kumamoto Prefecture recorded 110~120 mm/hr rainfall in Ashikita Town and Yatsushiro City, causing confirmed deaths of 20 persons. Sixteen more persons are in cardiopulmonary arrest, and 14 are missing. In the area, Self-Defence Forces have been dispatched to rescue people from marooned homes and facilities, including a special elderly care home in Kuma Village. Meanwhile, special torrential rain warnings were also issued in Kagoshima Prefecture, which registered record-breaking 94~99 mm/hr rainfalls in the cities of Hioki and Satsumasendai. According to the Fukuoka Regional Headquarters of Japan Meteorological Agency, the active rain front will move to northern Kyushu between July 5 ~ 6 and stay there through July 7. Rainfall of 120 mm/24hr is forecasted for prefectures of Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, and Oita, and people are advised to remain alert against floods and landslides. Sources: NHK / Yomiuri / JMA
