Huge Underground Tunnel to Help with Heavy Rains

A huge underground tunnel is being dug beneath central Fukuoka deal with heavy rains and to reduce the risk of floods. On October 19, a special launch ceremony was held 21 meters below ground level to celebrate the start of the excavation progress. There was approximately 100 guests in attendance, including Fukuoka City Mayor Takashima and officials from the construction companies involved. A huge shield-shaped machine with a diameter of 5.6 m, which can dig up to nine meters a day, will be used to make the tunnel. Work started on the section of the pipe that runs from Nagahama to Nanotsu. Once completed, the 4 km tunnel will provide an outlet for water overflow and is capable of holding approximately 160 pools (25 m in size) worth of rainwater. Source: TNC News, 10/19/2017
