Ichiran to Open Shops in NYC and Hong Kong

Fukuoka-based ramen chain Ichiran will open its first shops in New York by the end of summer 2014. It will open one shop in Manhattan concurrently with a factory/shop in Brooklyn in order to provide locally–sourced noodles, soup and toppings. The 315 m2 Manhattan shop will be located near Madison Square Garden and will seat 70. The shop layout, complete with the trademark cubicles and noren curtains, will be the same one used in Japan. Ichiran is investing ¥400 million in opening the two shops and anticipates annual sales of ¥800 million. Before the New York shops open, Ichiran will open its first shop in Hong Kong on July 11. While the company had previously operated a temporary shop in New York for the sake of market research, the Hong Kong shop will officially be its first overseas outlet. According to Ichiran President Yoshitomi, the company plans to continue expanding overseas at a “pace of two shops per year”, and has its sights set on “London, Paris, Beijing and other major urban centers”.
