Local residents have taken out a temporary injunction to prevent Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. (Kyuden) from restarting reactor numbers three and four at the Genkai nuclear power plant in Saga Prefecture. Last year, the reactors passed new safety tests, which were introduced following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. Plans were in place to restart the reactors early this year, until a group of 73 residents from Saga, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Yamaguchi called for Kyuden to suspend their activities. The residents’ group claim that the power plant is at risk of damage if the Mount Aso caldera erupts. Kyuden argue that the likelihood of the caldera causing a catastrophic pyroclastic flow is extremely low. The court will rule on the case later this month. Source: Mainichi Shimbun, 3/6/2018
