Fukuoka City held a ceremony on October 26 to mark the 20th anniversary of Island City, an artificial island in Higashi Ward developed as a major urban project. About 130 officials, company representatives, and residents attended the event at Island City Central Park. Mayor Soichiro Takashima highlighted the district’s economic role in Kyushu, noting that it now has around 14,900 residents and 280 businesses (Jan 2024). Construction of the 400-hectare island began in 1994 with a total cost of ¥394 billion, featuring residential and industrial zones. Anniversary events, including markets and family tours, will continue through late November. Source: Fukuoka City
