Itoshima Launches Summer Rock Oyster Shipments

Seasonal shipments of “rock oysters,” a summer delicacy, have begun in Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The local fishing cooperative reports that the oysters, cultivated over three years, can weigh over 500 grams each, making them notably large and meaty.

Producer Keiichiro Nakanishi noted that this year’s harvest is especially rich and flavorful. The peak season runs from June to July, and oysters will continue shipping through the end of August. Rock oysters are available at local direct-sale markets and also offered as return gifts for Itoshima’s hometown tax donations.

The number of oyster farming operations in the city has grown from two to eight over the past five years as Itoshima promotes the oysters as a new regional specialty. Source: NHK
