JR Kyushu President Yoji Furumiya reiterated that a route passing through Saga Station was the most desirable option for the undecided section of the West Kyushu Shinkansen. In New Year interviews, Furumiya said Saga Station offered strong convenience as a hub for conventional rail lines and city bus services, making it accessible from across the prefecture. The West Kyushu Shinkansen opened between Takeo-Onsen and Nagasaki in September 2022, but plans for the section linking Takeo-Onsen and Shin-Tosu remain undecided, including cost-sharing by Saga Prefecture. Furumiya said direct Shinkansen connections to Honshu could significantly expand Saga’s economic reach and said talks with national and prefectural governments were moving gradually forward.
