JR Kyushu has been given the primary responsibility in the project to develop a gauge change train, i.e., a train with variable gauge axles, which will be used on the western leg of the Kyushu Shinkansen. Responsibility for the development will be transferred in stages from the Railway Technical Research Institute this year. Plans call for JR to produce a prototype in two years, and conduct a trial run in about three years.
