JR Kyushu, Local Governments Discuss Future of Nichinan Line

JR Kyushu has formed a council with Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures and nearby municipalities to discuss the future of the Nichinan Line between Aburatsu (Miyazaki) and Shibushi (Kagoshima), where ridership has fallen sharply. President Yoji Furumiya said at an October 29 press conference that no decision had been made on the line’s future, emphasizing sustainable transport options. The section averaged just 179 daily passengers in fiscal 2023, down 70% from 1987, and posted a ¥418 million loss. The first meeting of the new council will be held on October 31 in Miyazaki.
