JR Kyushu to Build New Rail Facility in Kitakyushu

JR Kyushu announced plans to construct a new rail maintenance facility in Kitakyushu, transferring functions from the aging Kokura General Vehicle Center. Located on JR Freight land at Higashi-Kokura Station, the project will cost approximately 48 billion yen and is expected to be completed by fiscal 2031.

The new site will cover 78,000 square meters, half the size of the current center, and will feature advanced technology for efficient operations. The existing Kokura facility, over 130 years old, has become outdated.

Future uses for the current Kokura site are under consideration, with potential for residential or logistics development. Source: JR Kyushu
