On Dec. 19 it was revealed that JR Kyushu will enter the fruit and vegetable retail business. The company will open its first store in Fukuoka City next fall where it will sell fruits and vegetables made by local growers, including its Tosu-based subsidiary JR Kyushu Farm. JR Kyushu expanded into agriculture in 2010 as part of its diversification strategy. This July it consolidated its various farm-related subsidiaries into JR Kyushu Farm. Produce is currently sold through local agricultural cooperatives, but JR says it will launch online sales next March or April ahead of the planned bricks-and-mortar store. The company also plans to gradually open multiple stores in the future. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 12/20
