Kitakyushu Airport recorded a second consecutive year of record cargo volume in fiscal 2025 as semiconductor-related demand increased ahead of a planned runway extension in 2027. Cargo handling rose 12% year-on-year to 41,092 tons, supported by new domestic cargo flights operated by Yamato Transport and Japan Airlines. The airport has strengthened its position as a logistics hub for advanced semiconductor equipment after handling a roughly 180-ton lithography system imported from Europe. Local officials aim to capitalize on the airport’s 24-hour operations, planned 3,000-meter runway, and proximity to road and port infrastructure to compete with larger cargo airports in Japan.
