Kitakyushu’s administration and city assembly held the first meeting of a council pursuing designation as a backup capital for major disasters. The city is working with Fukuoka Prefecture and Fukuoka City under legislation passed in July. The new council will jointly discuss and examine the proposal. Mayor Kazuhisa Takeuchi called for cooperation with the assembly, businesses and residents, while assembly representatives highlighted the city’s relatively low disaster exposure.
