Kitakyushu-based Shabondama Soap is gaining international attention for a soap-based fire suppressant designed to reduce environmental damage caused by conventional firefighting foam. Developed with support from the Kitakyushu Fire Department, the suppressant uses soap-derived surfactants that help water penetrate burning materials more effectively while reducing water use during firefighting operations. The company says the foam also breaks down more easily in the environment than chemical-based alternatives. As large-scale forest fires increase worldwide, the product is being tested overseas, including in Indonesia through a JICA-backed SDGs support program. Researchers and local officials there have reported promising early results, though reducing production costs remains a challenge for wider adoption. Source: TVQ News / Shabondama Soap Co.
