Taxi fares in the Kitakyushu area increased on July 22, raising the base fare for standard vehicles from ¥610 to ¥700. The change affects 54 corporate taxi firms and 196 individual operators in Kitakyushu City, Nakama City, and Onga District. The distance for each ¥80 fare increment has also been shortened from 280 to 253 meters. The hike—the first since September 2022—aims to offset higher fuel costs and improve driver working conditions. Currently, driver numbers are 80% of pre-pandemic levels, with about 40% aged 70 or older. The fare increase is expected to help attract younger drivers. Source: Kitakyushu Taxi Association
