Kumamoto Designated as Semiconductor Visa Special Zone

Kumamoto Prefecture has been designated as a National Strategic Special Zone to expedite visa processing for foreign semiconductor professionals. This initiative aims to address labor shortages, exacerbated by the entry of Taiwan’s TSMC, by streamlining the certification process for local small and medium enterprises, reducing the time required from up to three months to about one month.

This designation seeks to attract highly skilled foreign workers to support Kumamoto’s growing semiconductor sector. The prefecture will simplify administrative procedures, making it easier for international talent to work in the region. By speeding up visa processing, Kumamoto aims to enhance its competitiveness in the semiconductor industry.

Local small and medium enterprises will benefit from a faster verification process for business conditions, allowing them to employ foreign professionals without lengthy delays. This move is expected to significantly boost the region’s capability to support its expanding semiconductor industry and attract further investment and technological advancements.

Governor Ikuo Kabashima stated that this strategic initiative would help solve labor shortages and position Kumamoto as a key hub for semiconductor innovation in Japan. The proactive approach aims to foster a dynamic industrial environment, ensuring sustainable growth and development for the region. Source: National Strategic Special Zones
