Kyudai Grad Students Design Hotel

Graduate students at Kyushu University’s Ito Campus have designed a hotel to be built in neighboring Itoshima. The students gave a presentation on their work at Itoshima City Hall on Feb. 28. The design was developed by seven students studying architecture under Prof. Terukazu Takeshita as part of their coursework in the Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies. The proposed site is on a 25-hectare piece of land that Itoshima City was planning to use for student housing and recreational facilities. Settle, a local development company, was planning to expand its existing student housing business to the area, and asked the students to design the hotel. The hotel will feature nine low-level buildings housing guest rooms and a two-story main building with a convention center that can accommodate 150 people. The total floor area is 1,360 m2, the total site area is 4,400 m2 and maximum occupancy is 48. Construction is slated to begin in 2014 after surrounding roads are upgraded.
