Kyuden to Keep Sendai Reactors Open

Sources say that Kyushu Electric Power Co. has decided not to shut off the reactors at the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant despite a recent request from Kagoshima Governor Satoshi Mitazono. The company plans to go ahead with the regular inspections scheduled for Reactors 1 and 2 on Oct. 6 and Dec. 16, respectively. However, in response to the Governor’s call to alleviate the concerns of prefectural residents, the company aims to show that it is taking efforts to provide more detailed information more promptly. The company will convene a meeting of the Board of Directors to issue a formal reply to Governor Mitazono in the near future. Last year, the reactors at Sendai were the first two to resume operation under the new regulatory regime put in place after the meltdowns at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
