Kyuden Move into the U.S. Market

Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. (Kyuden) announced on Dec. 15 that they will enter the U.S. power generation industry. The company bought an 11.1% stake in a thermal power plant in Pennsylvania that will start operating in 2019. The shares were acquired from Sojitz (a trading corporation based in Tokyo), but the cost of the investment has not yet been published. The output of the plant is expected to be 488,000 kilowatts. This will increase the scale of Kyuden’s overseas power generation to 1.63 million kilowatts, taking the company closer to their target of 5 million kilowatts by 2030.
