Kyushu District Transport Bureau has reported that the number of foreigners who entered Japan from the Kyushu area in 2018 will exceed five million for the first time. The figure rose by 3% from that of the previous year, 4,941,468. The area has seen the opening of new international flight routes as well as added numbers of flights by Star Flyer and other LCCs, which has lead to an increase of private tourists from Asian countries including Korea and China. (Editor’s note: numbers are based on statistics from immigration and therefore overseas visitors entering Kyushu on domestic flights or by train are not counted. Only first port entry visitors are counted.) Source: Nikkei Shimbun, 1/11/2019
