A historical road connecting eight cities between Nagasaki and Kitakyushu became recognized as a Japan Heritage on June 19. The 228-kilometer route is called Nagasaki Kaido, or ‘Sugar Road,’ and historically contributed to the spread of sugar culture in Japan (16~17th Century.) Various specialty sweets are enjoyed around the area to the present day, including kompeito candies in Kitakyushu and maruboro cakes in Saga. The promotional committee intends to mark the opportunity with sweets contests and other activities, and raise the awareness of the road. As of 2020, a total of 104 spots are registered as Japan Heritage. Source: Asahi / Saga
