Landslide in Yabakei, Oita Leaves One Dead and Five Missing

One person has reportedly died and five others are unaccounted for in the Yabakei Valley in Oita Prefecture following a large landslide that buried homes and roads. The landslide occurred at 3:50 a.m. Five women between the ages of 21 and 90 remain unaccounted for. Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have been called in to help with the search and rescue. The area is located within the Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park, a very popular area with tourists for its striking scenery including steep valleys. Source: Yomiuri Shimbun, 4/11/2018
