A survey conducted by a federation of teachers’ unions for private universities in the Tokyo area found that 34.5% of parents in Kyushu borrowed money to defray the expenses involved in sending their children to private universities or junior colleges in the Tokyo area. This is a substantially higher percentage than the national average of 19.4%. The average amount of money borrowed by Kyushu parents is 1.84 million yen. The survey was conducted last May and June.
