Skyrocketing materials prices have caused a sharp increase in Kyushu Shinkansen construction costs. As a result, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has asked local governments along the Shinkansen route to assume one third of these costs. This would amount to roughly 26 billion yen on the Kagoshima route and 6.5 billion yen on the Nagasaki route. The cash-strapped local governments are asking that the liabilities be reduced, however.
