Furniture maker Sansouing of Oita Prefecture teamed with Japan Airlines and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology to create a bamboo wheelchair for use in airports that won’t set off metal detectors. The wheelchair, which is said to be very comfortable, was shown to the public at Haneda Airport on the 21st of December. The company has built three by hand, which cost 600,000 yen each. One will go in service at Oita Airport in January, and two will be used at Haneda Airport starting in February.
