Magnitude 6.0 Quake Shakes Miyazaki and Kagoshima

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of the Osumi Peninsula at 11:04 p.m. on April 2, registering a seismic intensity of 4 in parts of Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures, including Miyazaki City, Nichinan, Kushima, Kanoya, Shibushi, Higashikushira, Kinko, and Kimotsuki. No tsunami was generated. Intensity 3 tremors were felt widely across Miyazaki, Kagoshima, and parts of Kumamoto and Saga, while weaker shaking reached broad areas of Kyushu, Shikoku, and the Chugoku region. Long-period ground motion level 1, the lowest on the four-level scale, was observed in Miyakonojo, Kobayashi, Shintomi, Kagoshima City, and Ibusuki, with the Japan Meteorological Agency noting that such motion may be felt by many in high-rise buildings.
