Male Chimpanzee Returns to Fukuoka Zoo After Six Years

On the 17th of May, the Fukuoka Zoo welcomed a male and a female chimpanzee, an event noteworthy because the zoo hasn’t housed a male chimpanzee for the past six years. The chimpanzees, brought to the zoo in large crates carried by 20 staff members, attracted the attention of many visitors. Named “Kako” and “Atsushi,” these newcomers hail from Chausuyama Zoo in Nagano City and are both approximately 30 years old in human terms. Currently, the Fukuoka Zoo is home to three female chimpanzees. The decision to adopt the new pair aligns with the zoo’s objective of promoting breeding within a more natural and balanced social structure. Yusuke Kawashima, a representative from the zoo, emphasized that such group dynamics offer visitors a glimpse into the natural social behaviors of these fascinating creatures. As per plans, visitors can look forward to observing all five chimpanzees together starting from next year. Source: Fukuoka Zoo / KBC
