METI Orders Improvement for Major Utilities including Kyuden

The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) has issued business improvement orders to subsidiaries of Kyushu Electric Power, Kansai Electric Power, and Chugoku Electric Power, after their employees illegally accessed customer information of competing companies. The orders pointed out that Kansai Electric Power used customer data for business activities, Kyushu Electric Power made decisions to use the transmission system for company operations, and Chugoku Electric Power’s subsidiary had information management deficiencies. The companies must submit improvement plans by May 12th, fundamentally reviewing their compliance systems, and provide progress reports on their measures to prevent recurrence. METI also conducted administrative guidance for the top executives of all 10 major electric power companies in a separate case of illegally accessing information about renewable energy generators.
