Monkeypox Testing System Being Developed in Fukuoka Prefecture

Following the first confirmed “monkeypox” case, a testing system is being developed in Fukuoka Prefecture. According to the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, the infected man in Tokyo is believed to have been infected in Europe and visited a medical institution yesterday after experiencing symptoms of fatigue, rash, fever, and headache. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 16,000 people in Europe, the United States, and other countries have been confirmed to be infected with monkeypox. Most of those infected overseas are male, and it is believed that the infection is spread mainly through same-sex sexual intercourse. Fukuoka Prefecture has notified medical institutions through the Fukuoka Medical Association that if they see a patient with symptoms suspected to be infected with monkeypox, they should consult with the nearest public health center, and if the patient tests positive, the designated medical institutions in the prefecture will give priority to accept the patient. In addition, the prefectural government, Fukuoka City, and the Kitakyushu Institute of Public Health and Environment have already established a testing system for the monkeypox virus. The Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare is urging people who have stayed in Europe, the United States, and other countries to visit a medical institution if they have any symptoms such as rash, just in case.
