More Storage at Genkai Nuclear Plant Announced

Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. has requested approval for construction of additional dry cask storage for radioactive waste in Genkai Nuclear Plant. After restarting reactors numbers three and four in 2018, the amount of spent fuels stored in the plant’s pools has increased. To avoid possible lack of temporary storage that may occur within 5~7 years, the company has submitted the plan to the country’s Nuclear Regulation Authority. The storage facility will be around 3,000 square meters and 30-meter high, where 40 casks can be stowed. Kyuden is seeing to start using the facility from 2027.
