“Minamata,” a Johnny Depp-starring period film about the environmental disaster in Minamata (Kumamoto Prefecture,) will be released in Japan in September 2021. Directed by Andrew Levitas, “Minamata” tells the lives of communities that suffered the devastating impacts of Minamata Disease through the eyes of an American photojournalist, Eugene Smith. The story is based on the book of the same name, written by him and his wife, Aileen Mioko Smith. The Japanese distributor, Longride, is planning to hold special screenings of the film in Minamata City before it officially releases across Japan. Learn more about Minamata disease here.
