A Fukuoka organization for conducting trials of multimedia broadcasts, whose members include FM stations in Kyushu and Okinawa, announced it will begin trials in April in Fukuoka Prefecture of multimedia broadcasts to cell phones and terminals in automobiles. Multimedia broadcasts use the analog television frequencies of 90-108 MHz, whose use was discontinued last year with the start of digital terrestrial television broadcasts. The system can be used to broadcast information on natural disasters or items of interest for daily life whenever the need arises. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is proceeding with plans to begin full-scale broadcasts in the spring of 2013.
