New Control Tower Debuts at Fukuoka Airport

Fukuoka Airport’s new control tower, standing at 94.2 meters tall, began operations on December 5. It was constructed in anticipation of the second runway’s opening in March 2025 and is the second tallest control tower in Japan after Haneda Airport’s.

The tower’s increased height improves visibility, addressing the challenge of the narrow 210-meter spacing between the two runways, where overlapping views from the previous, lower tower posed safety concerns. The new facility also features an expanded control room of approximately 150 square meters—nearly double the size of the old one—to accommodate additional air traffic controllers for the expected increase in flights.

Officials emphasize that the new tower will enhance safety while serving as a symbol of the airport’s modernization and Fukuoka’s growing prominence as an international hub. It will initially handle operations for the existing runway while preparing for the second runway’s integration in 2025. Source: MLIT / NHK
