A total of 33 hotels are expected to open in the center of Fukuoka City in the next two years. The increase in the number of international visitors to Fukuoka has meant that there are currently not enough rooms available at local accommodation facilities. The city’s Tourism and Industry Department revealed that the number of rooms in hotels and ryokan plateaued at approximately 24,000 rooms from 2009, before the construction of 12 new buildings in 2017 saw that figure rise by 1,300. Demand has also increased, with occupancy rates in 2017 averaging at 84%, which is 24 points higher than the national average. Making reservations at accommodation facilities on weekends has become more difficult for visitors on business trips, sightseeing excursions, and students staying in the area to take university entrance exams. As many as 26 new buildings equating to 3,637 rooms will open in Hakata and Tenjin during the 2018 fiscal year, with a further 7 (1,614 rooms) scheduled for 2019. Once the various facilities have opened, the total number of rooms available in the city is expected to exceed 30,000. Source: Hotelier News, 4/10/2018
