New JR Station to be Built in Itoshima

A new JR station will be built in Itoshima between Chikuzen Maebaru and Hatae. Construction will begin this summer with the aim of opening in Spring 2019. Approximately 4,800 passengers a day are expected to use the station. The two-storey station building will cover 420 square meters and will include offices, ticket gates, restrooms, and a free overpass connecting the south and north sides of the station. The cost of the station building is estimated at ¥940 million while the passageway is set to cost ¥430 million. When added to the cost of creating a plaza in front of both exits and improving road access to the station, the total estimate is set at ¥2.5 billion. The city has organized an association to promote the construction together with local organizations and has collected contributions to help with costs. Itoshima Koko-mae (station in front Itoshima High School) has been suggested as a potential name. Source: Mainichi Shimbun, 5/26/2017
