The education committee for Saikai City in Nagasaki Prefecture announced a discovery of fossilized bones of an extinct species of cormorant. The bones of flightless cormorants (copepteryx,) or ‘penguin modoki’ as they are called in Japan, were found in a stratum dating back to some 34 million years ago. It is believed to be one of the oldest fossils of the bird family, and belongs to a new species of ancient cormorant. Source: Nagasaki NP / Fukui Pref. / NHK
