New Whaling Ship Proposed by Shimonoseki City

In the backdrop of Japan’s resumption of commercial whale hunting, Shimonoseki City has proposed the construction of a new whaling ship. The city has many whale-related companies and will serve as a base port for whale hunts set to begin in July 2019. On May 23, the mayor of the Shimonoseki and the governor of Yamaguchi Prefecture visited the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to request the construction the new ship takes place in Shimonoseki to replace the Nisshin-maru, which is now over 30 years old.
